Winterfest Highlights

Winterfest was last week and it was lovely! It was wonderful to see all of the great artwork made by students in Lexington One! I managed to take a few photos before the Old Mill got crowded (we had a great turnout). Here are a few highlights!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this show possible! The art will be on display until February 16th, so stop by and check it out!

Winterfest!

You're invited to the
6th Annual Winterfest Art Show Opening Reception and Exhibit
February 2, 2012
6:00-7:30pm
Old Mill in Lexington, SC

This show is sponsored by the Lexington One elementary art teachers and will include artwork from every elementary school in our district.

We have ten very talented artists from PES who will be represented in this show! If you can't make it on Thursday evening for the reception, the exhibit will remain up until February 16th, so you'll still have time to see it!

Happy 100!

Yesterday was the 100th day of school! The first graders celebrated by dressing up like they were 100 years old. How fun is that?!
Also, I cannot believe that 100 days of this school year are already over!

AND we're back!

Lately in the Art Room...
2nd grade students have been studying the Fauves! They created a background for a Fauvist drawing by scraping chalk into a tub of water and...

Laying a piece of paper in the water gently. The swirly chalk bits stick to the paper and dry to make some beautiful designs. Students will complete a self portrait on top of the chalk background!
Leaf printmaking!
Fourth graders made their own scratch-art paper using crayons and tempera. They modeled this artwork after ancient Grecian urns.
Grecian urns
After looking at the art of Georgia O'Keeffe, 3rd grade students began drawings of realistic flowers. We used fake flowers as models for the drawings!
Students tried to draw the fake flowers realistically and close-up, like O'Keeffe!
Now that I've worked out a few photo software issues with my school computer, I promise that this blog will be updated more frequently! We have a lot of fun things going on in the art room right now. Our art fair is coming up soon in March so most of the lessons are geared toward that right now!
Stay tuned for more!

Attack!

CRICKET ATTACK!

Not really, but seriously, every time I open my classroom door into our courtyard, a few crickets come charging into the room. I end up on the floor trying to catch crickets to return them to the wild.

This week, I stopped fighting the crickets and started catching them in a bug catcher to take to release them in front of the school so it's harder for them to come back.

A few years ago (while I was student teaching), I taught a cricket drawing lesson. With all the spare crickets around, it seemed like a good time to try it again. Instead of putting a cricket or two on each table, I decided to just use the document camera to project them on the board.

These drawings are by 1st and 2nd grade students. We talked about the parts of an insect and counted the legs on our "models." My students loved the crickets and I loved watching them draw the crickets. Their drawings turned out wonderfully!

Disclaimer: Crickets were caught and released daily. No crickets were harmed during this lesson!
